Will Walton is a partner at Walton, Theiler & Winegarden, LLC, bringing a unique combination of prosecutorial experience and private defense expertise to his practice. His background as a former Assistant District Attorney gives him invaluable insight into how the State builds cases — and how to effectively defend against them.
Will was raised in a rural, agricultural portion of Texas, where he developed the work ethic and straight-talking approach that defines his legal practice. He went on to study Agriculture and Business at Stephen F. Austin State University, earning a bachelor's degree in Agribusiness, with Honors, in 1998.
After working for an international automotive manufacturer and a national automotive corporation, Will turned his attention and dedication to the law. He attended Southern Methodist University's Dedman School of Law, earning his Doctor of Jurisprudence, again with Honors, in 2003.
During his time at SMU, Will was a member and articles editor for the SMU Law Review. He also worked as a teaching assistant and tutor for legal writing and contracts, as well as successfully engaging in their advocacy program.
During law school, Will was fortunate to work for one of the area's more recognized and successful personal injury lawyers, focusing on wrongful death and medical malpractice cases. By graduation, Will had already joined the firm of Hartline, Dacus Barger, Dryer & Kern, LLP, in their Dallas office, with a practice focused in personal injury and commercial litigation.
"Will made the simple mistake, however, of visiting Alaska after the Texas Bar Exam in 2003 and fell in love with the State. Ultimately, Will made the difficult but great decision to leave a successful firm and practice in Dallas to make Alaska his home."
In January 2006, Will left the big-city law firm life and moved to Kenai after accepting an appointment as an Assistant District Attorney for the State of Alaska Department of Law. Although successful in this endeavor, Will realized his true passion was representing people, not the State or large corporations.
This prosecutorial experience gives Will a distinct advantage in criminal defense. He understands exactly how prosecutors think, what evidence they prioritize, and where their cases may be vulnerable. This insight is invaluable when defending clients facing criminal charges.
